Why is it that the word “diet” automatically conjures up thoughts of someone being overweight, unhealthy, undisciplined and so on? The dictionary defines the word diet as “a particular selection of food, especially as designed or prescribed to improve a person’s physical condition or to prevent or treat a disease”. In my case, diet means improve.
Being an active sports person, I constantly look for effective ways of enjoying my lifestyle to its fullest – and this year I made the decision that my eating habits need attention. It’s not so much that they were totally bad, but sometimes we all need a helping hand from a trusted professional. At my annual medical this year, I discussed this topic with my GP, and she pointed me in the direction of Nicola at Nutritional Solutions.
Surprisingly, I have learnt to eat more. Even more surprisingly, are that the results have been nothing short of amazing. Eat lots of the good stuff, and crave less of the bad. Life is full of distractions and temptations, and as much as I thought I was doing OK as far as my eating patterns were concerned, I knew that I could do better.
And I like being good at what I do. Racing off-road motorcycles is physically and mentally demanding, and so nutrition plays a big part, as with any other sport. What I have been most shocked with, is how much positive difference it makes in a very short space of time. At my first event, 6 weeks after my first session with Nicola, I found myself thinking “this feels AMAZING”. To feel energized and focused for 5 hours was remarkable.
Sometimes in life, improvements mean we need to make changes. Some are bigger than others, but all require a measure of commitment. In my case, I am committed to enjoying a healthy lifestyle, and to getting the most out my motorcycle racing. If “dieting” means I ride better, than diet is what I’ll do.
And I get to eat more. Amazing!
The rules of engagement are quite simple – you just have to decide if you want to feel fabulous….then go out and do what you’re told.
